Convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was found by guards in his prison cell, barely conscious, with possible injuries, according to reports—raising speculation about a possible attack, or even a suicide attempt.
Reports claim Jeffrey Epstein is now on suicide watch after he was found in his cell, curled up in the fetal position. They say he was barely conscious, and had marks on his neck, and that the incident happened sometime within the last two days.
The Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan where Epstein is being held has yet to address these claims, and earlier this week, Epstein’s team filed an appeal in another attempt to get him out of jail on bail while he awaits charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy.
The theories about what happened to Epstein include that he may have tried to hang himself in a suicide attempt; he harmed himself to try to get transferred to a different jail; or that he was assaulted by another inmate.
However, the report also noted that the inmate who is believed to be sharing a cell with Epstein has denied any involvement.
Epstein has repeatedly complained about the conditions of the prison that he is currently in, but the fact that he was denied bail last week, sent a powerful message.
Epstein’s team has claimed he has been completely clean since his last run-in with the law in 2008, but US District Judge Richard Berman argued that the evidence shows otherwise.
In his decision, Berman wrote, “I doubt that any bail package can overcome danger to the community.” He said that he believes Epstein is a threat to both the “minor victims in this case and prospective victims as well.”
In the same way that prosecutors need Epstein to stay alive in order to find out what he knows, there are a number of wealthy and powerful people he has been connected to who arguably want to keep that information hidden.
If we look back at files that were released by the FBI last year, one document from September 11, 2008, states that “Epstein has also provided information to the FBI as agreed upon. Case agent advised that no federal prosecution will occur in this matter as long as Epstein continues to uphold his agreement with the State of Florida.”
So there is speculation that Epstein received the incredibly light plea deal he did because, as the document says, he “provided information to the FBI as agreed upon,” which could raise fears among the powerful and wealthy people he is connected to, that Epstein would try to strike another deal and provide more information to authorities to get out of spending the rest of his life in prison.
UPDATE: Aug. 10, 2019 – Reports are now claiming Epstein was found dead in his jail cell
