WHY ISN’T ANYONE TALKING ABOUT: Trump Admin’s TikTok Ban Comes As Close Ally Microsoft Moves To Buy It

The Trump Admin’s ban on TikTok comes just in time for Microsoft to save the day as it moves forward with plans to acquire the app. But Microsoft actually does have direct ties to the US Gov’t in the form of thousands of military contracts and no plans to protect your data…

On today’s edition of ‘Why Isn’t Anyone Talking about This?’ the Trump Administration is moving forward with plans to buy the social media app TikTok, claiming it presents privacy and security concerns because it is owned by a company based in China. While ByteDance has denied the allegations that it is giving the Chinese Government full access to all of the data collected by an app that is used by hundreds of thousands of children and teenagers across the US, that hasn’t stopped the US Government from targeting it.

But the timing is incredibly notable here because the all-American company Microsoft just so happens to be in talks right now to acquire TikTok, and it is including the US Government in the deal. This sets the stage for Microsoft to jump in and “save the day” by stopping the US from banning the app and ensuring that the children still have access to TikTok—while their parents are told not to worry about all of their data that is still being collected, because it is now being collected by an American company.

But Microsoft actually does have the government ties it is accusing ByteDance of, and it is known as the leader in the US tech industry got government contracts. According to a study conducted by Tech Inquiry, “Microsoft stood out with more than 5,000 subcontracts with the Department of Defense and various federal law enforcement agencies since 2016.”

We have moved into a new era where Big Tech is falling into bed with Big Government—and as a result, Google is creating artificial intelligence technology for the US Military, and Amazon is giving local law enforcement access to the footage from its Ring doorbell cameras installed at residential homes.

Yet we are stuck with the message that as long as it’s an American company, it can be trust. When in reality, the US Government had continued to increase its own power over the years, at the expense of the American people and their constitutionally protected rights—and that is something everyone should be talking about.
